Do people make it disappear or prevent public access to the archives if they put it online?
Well, that's because Philadelphia-based Healthcare Advocates has sued a law firm and the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine for unlawfully gaining access to records, breach of contract and negligence. The Internet Archive is a searchable library of old versions of websites that is complied as a nonprofit public service for web users.
The "robots.txt" file placed in the root directory of any website, blocks public access to the archives for privacy concerns. The reason why Healthcare Advocates is suing the Internet Archive is that, the nonprofit site didn't do enough to protect old records of the firm's website.
I don't feel that the Internet Archive did enough to prevent anyone from unauthorised reproduction of a website if the "robots.txt" file is implemented on a website.
Anyways, you can read more about this story from Red Herring.
